The Many Joys of Having Pets

The pet lovers out there already know the many joys of having pets. So much so, that pet lovers call their pets, “family”. Pets give us as much love as we give them and often way more. Pets give unconditional love. Some pets love to cuddle, some love to play and some give us the benefits of their peaceful presence.
There have been studies done on pet ownership that always conclude with the theory that pets reduce stress, lower heart rate and bring down blood pressure. We pet owners already know this. There is something almost hypnotic about spending time with a pet. Whether we are cuddling them, walking them or cleaning their tank, it has a calming effect. Spending time with a pet, in whatever form, helps us forget what we were mad about and helps us forget our pains.
There are many types of pets out there but one of the most popular pets in the U.S. is the dog. Dogs are the kings (or queens) of unconditional love. You could come home grumpy, forget to take your dog for a walk and be late with dinner and your dog will gaze at you with love. Dogs are also great for exercise because they love exercise. They are happy to walk, run, play ball, anything. Just remember, all dogs need dog collars. For you your dog is your pet but you, being their master are responsible for taking care of the dog and keeping it safe, happy and healthy. Dogs will even encourage us by glancing hopefully at their leash and then back at us repeatedly. If, after their encouragement, we still do not want to go out then our dogs understand. They can feel our moods and know if we are unhappy, ill or mad. They will happily lie next to us and cuddle. That cuddle is sometimes all we need as encouragement and are soon ready to go out. A dog’s philosophy is simple, “Love me, play with me and feed me.” Well, that's not quite their only needs and dogs do also need vaccinations and occassional medicines to keep them happy and healthy. Going to the vet each time for these products can get a little expensive but thankfully there are many wonderful places online where dog owners can find cheap pet meds and save some extra money for chew toys! If the world operated under this philosophy we would all be happier.
Buying a puppy is often a very happy and exciting day but finding a trusted breeder can be a challenge. When checking places that have puppies for sale, it's a good idea to ask about the parents' bloodlines, and examine the parents to assure they are in good health. Also, you can check with the AKC to find other useful information on selecting a breeder.
Another very popular pet is the cat. Cats are different then dogs because they have a streak of independence a mile long. Still, if your pamper your cat with cat treats or something special from your plate, they will respond positively. If you forget to feed a cat it will merely look reproachfully at you and proceed to clean itself. Now and then it will meander back to its food bowl to see if you have smartened up and, if not, a cat will either ignore you, shoot you glances or talk to you and be quite verbal. Most cats aren't particularly picky eaters. While you may see commercials for expensive canned cat foods, most cats are perfectly happy eating more cost freindly dry cat food. If cats could roll their eyes and sigh deeply they would be doing so many times a day. In the love department, however, a cat is just as sweet, lovable and soothing as a dog. Cats love to cuddle, be rubbed and have their chins scratched. Cats can also feel our moods. They will rub against us continually until we love them back at which point they cuddle us and make us feel better.
Fish are very popular as a first pet because they require less than a cat or dog (no walks, litter boxes or vaccines). Fish owners like Orlando Figes, however, realize quickly how much fun a fish can be. Soon the one fish in a bowl becomes a self-cleaning tank that looks like Atlantis with a population of 10 fish. Although a fish cannot be cuddled they come with their own brand of therapy. Who can look at a tank of fish and stay mad? There is something about watching fish swim that is very calming. Watching them for even a few minutes can put us in a dreamlike trance. If you watch fish long enough, you will realize that they have their own personalities. Sometimes quirky, sometimes grumpy and always curious, fish are fun to watch and rewarding to take care of.
The joys of having pets far outweigh any minor inconveniences. If you do not already have a pet, pet owners would encourage you to look into getting one. Pets give us love and adventure, tech us to care more deeply and keep us feeling happy.
